We've had a few questions this week regarding mounting options for Helix lead screw assemblies so we thought we would take a few moments and do a little write up about it.

There are many variations available when it comes to mounting the ends of your lead screw as well as many variables involved in determining the most appropriate mounting option. This is something that we refer to as "end fixity". We define end fixity as the method by which the ends of the screw are supported.

The degree of end fixity is related to the amount of restraint of the ends of the screw.

There are basically four types of end fixity:

a.) Fixed/Free

b.) Simple/Simple

c.) Fixed/Simple

d.) Fixed/Fixed

Simple End fixity can be provided through a single bearing support as depicted in the image below.

Free-simple-fixed

Multiple or spaced pairs of bearings are more rigid than a Simple support option but due to their compliance, they are not truly considered "Fixed".

A screw can be supported using different combinations of end fixity. Here are a few examples:

Example A:

Fig8TypA

One end with a Double Bearing EZZE-MOUNT and the other end Free. Most probably the simplest option, this is not recommended for any application other than short travels and slow speeds.

Example B:

Figure-8-Type-B

One end supported with a Double Bearing EZZE-MOUNT and the other end supported with a Single Bearing EZE-Mount.

Example C:

Fig-8C

Both ends supported with a Double Bearing EZZE-MOUNT.

Example D:

EZRFFig-D-2

Both ends supported with Quad Bearing EZRF EZZE-MOUNT. When supporting a screw with two Quad Bearing EZRF EZZE-MOUNTS, the screw is highly rigid and extra care needs to be taken to ensure compliance in the design of your lead screw assembly.

(For the above examples and other configurations, please refer to the reference charts in our catalog for details on mounting options).

These are just a few examples of the many options that you have available when mounting your Helix lead screw assemblies. There are countless other mounting and support options but these examples should get you started in the right direction. As always, feel free to contact one of our experts if you need additional assistance or visit our website to view all of the standard end bearing support options that we offer.
